Arnold Schwarzenegger is a singular figure in California history, embodying the Golden State’s promise of opportunity. From humble beginnings, he built himself into a world champion bodybuilder, Hollywood icon, successful businessman, environmentalist, philanthropist, best-selling author, and the 38th Governor of California.
Born in Thal, Austria, Schwarzenegger entered competitive bodybuilding and, at 20, became the youngest winner of the Mr. Universe title. In 1968, he immigrated to the U.S., going on to win four more Mr. Universe and seven Mr. Olympia titles before shifting to acting.

He debuted in Hercules in New York (1970) and gained recognition with a Golden Globe for Stay Hungry (1976). His breakout came with Conan the Barbarian (1982), followed by his iconic role in The Terminator (1984). To date, his films have grossed over $3 billion.

Elected Governor in California’s historic 2003 recall, Schwarzenegger ushered in innovative leadership that elevated the state’s global standing. His accomplishments include the landmark Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, major conservation efforts, and the largest infrastructure investment in state history. He overhauled workers’ comp, advanced health and education reforms, promoted open primaries, and fought gerrymandering—all while leveraging his global celebrity to serve as California’s marketer-in-chief around the world.

Since leaving office, he founded the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy and the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative. He chairs After-School All-Stars and shares health advice through his daily newsletter and podcast, Arnold’s Pump Club. He also produced and appeared in the Emmy-winning Years of Living Dangerously, starred in Netflix’s FUBAR (2023, 2025), and continues to reprise his role as The Terminator.

Schwarzenegger’s extraordinary life—spanning fitness, entertainment, business, politics, and philanthropy—epitomizes California’s spirit of determination and vision. He is a living legacy of what is possible in the Golden State.
