Annual Día de los Muertos Fiesta Returns
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — September 6, 2022: Coincides with opening of “Mujeres Inspiradoras” exhibit featuring altars by female artists dedicated to actors Lon Chaney, Bruce Lee and Betty White
After two years of virtual gatherings, the California Museum’s annual Día de los Muertos fiesta is back in-person on Fri., Oct. 14, 2022 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm. Guests of all ages are invited to celebrate this ancient cultural tradition through art, food and entertainment, including a performance and ceremonial blessing by Maquilli TonatiuhAztec Dancers; live music by Mariachi Bonitas de Dinorah Klingler; remarks by Consul General of Mexico in Sacramento Liliana Ferrer; food and beverages for purchase by Mayahuel and a Mercado de los Muertos featuring pop-up shops by regional artisans and artists including John S. Huerta.
Additional family-friendly fun and interactive activities include popular sugar skull workshops with Rob-O of I Love Sugar Skulls ($15 materials fee), hands-on crafts suitable for ages three and up, and a costume contest with prizes. Guests are encouraged to honor friends and family members who have passed with a remembrance in the Community Altar.
Optional altar templates can be downloaded ahead of time or created on-site.
The fiesta also celebrates the opening of “Mujeres Inspiradoras: Día de los Muertos 2022” (Inspiring Women: Day of the Dead 2022), a temporary exhibit featuring contemporary altars and artwork by an all-female roster of artists. On display through Nov. 5, 2022, the annual exhibit explores the Mexican cultural tradition of honoring deceased loved ones each year on Nov. 1 and 2 by creating calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls), altares de muertos (altars of the dead) and ofrendas(offerings). Artists Sonya Fe, Lila Rivera and Willow Vielguth will display artwork and create altars dedicated to actors Lon Chaney, Bruce Lee and Betty White.
Tickets are $10 in advance through 5:00 pm on Thurs., Oct. 13 or until sold out. Attendees must follow Museum COVID- 19 protocols in place at the time of the event, which currently include an indoor mask requirement for ages two and up.
