Honor, Recognition & Respect: 48-Star Flag Gifting Ceremony
Commemorate the donation of a 48-star flag and pay tribute to the resilience, struggle, hardships, and heartache suffered by survivors of the Japanese American incarceration camps.
May 17, 2025 | 11 am – 12 pm
The California Museum is hosting a special 48-Star Flag Gifting Ceremony, recognizing the resilience and legacy of Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II. This historic flag, signed by survivors of the incarceration camps and Nisei veterans, has traveled across the country as part of an effort to preserve and share their stories. The ceremony will celebrate the donation of this meaningful artifact to the California Museum’s Uprooted: An American Story exhibit and pay tribute to those who endured injustice yet persevered in shaping American history.
This free event is open to all, especially those interested in history and the many Sacramento-area survivors and their families who signed a flag. The one-hour ceremony will include a short video screening, followed by remarks by camp survivors and leaders of the 48-Star Flag Signing project. Light refreshments will be provided.

About the 48-Star Flag Project

Prior flags have been donated to the Japanese American National Museum, the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, and the Korematsu Institute. At this event, he will gift flag #5 to the California Museum.
