Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Communications and Marketing Director, the Communications and Marketing Assistant contributes significantly to advancing the California Museum’s mission by promoting its exhibitions, public programs, and educational offerings through the website, social media, e-newsletters, outreach, and other promotional channels.
Working closely with the marketing team, the Communications and Marketing Assistant develops and implements strategies to enhance audience engagement, elevate event and exhibit visibility, and ensure consistency in messaging and branding. This role requires a proactive, detail-oriented individual with strong technical skills in social media management and video editing, paired with a passion for storytelling and fostering community connections. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver who works independently and finds creative solutions when challenges arise. They are a critical thinker who contributes fresh, innovative ideas that align with the Museum’s brand and mission.
Responsibilities:
- Social Media:
- In collaboration with the marketing team, create and maintain an engaging presence for the Museum on multiple social media platforms by managing the posting of a regular schedule of highly visual posts to promote Museum activities, share mission-related content, and increase the Museum’s social media following.
- Manage day-to-day aspects of social media, including copywriting, scheduling, posting, commenting and following key accounts.
- Creation of digital assets – including photos, videos, and motion graphics – in collaboration with the Graphic Design and Communications Specialist.
- Keep abreast of current trends to expand Museum’s social media presence to new platforms as appropriate
- Work closely with the Marketing and Communications Director to develop and manage paid advertising campaigns on social media.
- Provide regular reports on social media performance, including insights and actionable recommendations to enhance engagement through both organic and paid advertising strategies.
- Video Production:
- Capture dynamic, on-site footage of museum events, exhibits, and behind-the-scenes activities for social media and promotional use.
- Edit raw video footage into polished, engaging clips suitable for various platforms (social media, website, news outlets).
- Ensure consistency in branding, tone, and messaging across all video content.
- Community Outreach:
- Conduct research and develop custom contact databases to aid community outreach efforts.
- Assist in the local promotion of events and exhibits and promote positive community relations via outreach to community partners and organizations.
- Developing flyer distribution lists custom to events and exhibits, and as needed, distributing flyers.
- Miscellaneous:
- Assist with additional marketing and communications efforts, including: development of media lists, restocking physical marketing materials, newsletter development, website updates, and more.

Technical Skills:
- Video editing (both social media and traditional video production skills are desired)
- Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere) and Adobe Express/Canva
- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn
- Word Press CMS
- Constant Contact & email database management
Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of relevant professional experience in social media and digital content creation
- Strong video production skills with a keen eye for storytelling and visual composition
- Ability to plan and execute all aspects of social media campaigns
- Strong writing and editorial skills with impeccable attention to consistency, accuracy, and detail
- Exceptional visual storytelling and production skills across mediums and platforms
- Creativity, flexibility, and a collaborative work ethic
- Strong initiative and ability to work independently
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, multimedia, or a related field preferred
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster or an approved exemption
- Fluency in English required; bilingual English/Spanish a plus
Position:
Full-time, hourly nonexempt, reports to the Communications and Marketing Director. Typical work hours Mon.-Fri. 8:30 am- 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Eligible for up to 20% remote work upon request after 90 days. Starting pay $24/hour.
