Job Description
The Exhibits Technician plays a key role in installing, fabricating, and maintaining the Museum’s long-term and temporary exhibits, advancing its mission to educate people about California’s rich history, its diversity, and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art, and culture. Working as a part of the exhibits team, the Exhibits Technician facilitates the construction of exhibit components and provides support for the installation and deinstallation of Museum objects and displays.
Responsibilities:
- Daily maintenance of exhibits, including surface cleaning and repairs.
- Construct, install, and dismantle temporary exhibits including performing basic fabrication with a variety of materials and media
- Perform carpentry for custom pedestal and case construction, including sanding, painting, and finishing
- Fabricate exhibit graphics and labels using dry mounting techniques
- Implement lighting schemes for temporary exhibits with attention to conservation requirements
- Build custom storage and shipping containers that meet professional standards of conservation and security
- Assist with packing and unpacking art and artifacts
- Assist with the loading and unloading of deliveries, ensuring safe movement of artwork and crates
- Monitor temperature, humidity and light levels in galleries and storage areas
- Monitor workshop tools and other exhibit equipment inventories and place routine supply orders
- Maintain the museum workshops including the safe use and maintenance of power and hand tools
- Collaborate in a team environment to produce superior quality exhibitions
- Ability to perform physical work associated with preparation of exhibits
- Ability to multi-task and assume a variety of projects simultaneously
- Support outside contractors as needed
- Other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in fine art and exhibit preparation, including the safe handling of art and artifacts
- Ability to work accurately from schematics, drawings, and verbal descriptions
- Basic computer literacy
- Valid California driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of experience in art/artifact handling and/or carpentry
- Demonstrated familiarity with basic woodshop power tools and safety procedures, and the ability to use power and hand tools safely
- Ability to see objects up close and at a distance
- Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary and to participate in a wide variety of duties as assigned
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster or an approved medical or religious exemption

While performing the duties of this job, the exhibits technician may be required to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Full range of motion, including but not limited to use hands and arms to reach, handle, grasp and feel above head, bending, crouching, stooping, lifting, etc. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. or more unassisted and climb ladders up to 14 ft.

Position
Part-time at approximately 24 hours weekly Monday – Friday (schedule to be determined), with occasional evening and/or weekend hours. This position is temporary for approximately 6 months. Reports to Exhibitions Director. Hourly at $24/hour.
