Education Director

Overview:

The Education Director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of innovative, high-quality education programs for the California Museum, advancing its mission to educate people about California’s rich history, its diversity and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art and culture. The Education Director also has primary responsibility for the education programs of the Unity Center at the California Museum, which encourages visitors to take an active stance against hate and intolerance. As a member of the management team, the Education Director plays a crucial role in establishing department policies, practices, and direction and participates in Museum strategic planning.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with other members of the Museum’s leadership team, set the direction of education programs and outreach educational activities, ensuring engaging programming that advances the Museum’s mission and meets the needs of teachers, students, and the diverse communities of California
  • Develop and manage the education department’s budget in alignment with strategic goals
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate education staff; lead staff in setting goals and in developing and managing effective workplans.
  • Support staff in developing and overseeing the training of volunteers
  • Participate in program delivery as needed
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Museum on education issues
  • Work with community groups to provide educational experiences on- or off-site
  • Coordinate and oversee advisory committees; establish and maintain partnerships with universities, school districts, government agencies, community groups, and others to inform and support the Museum’s education programs
  • Ensure that the Museum provides quality standards- and research-based education programs to K-12 school groups and professional learning opportunities for educators
  • Evaluate audience needs and program effectiveness and use findings to shape programming
  • Oversee, contribute to, and support education staff in developing interpretive materials, thematic tours, public programs, teacher workshops, online resources, and other educational services for adult and youth audiences
  • Serve as a member of the planning team to develop and deliver programming related to exhibitions
  • Identify grant opportunities; write and manage grants for the education department
  • Identify opportunities to expand the Museum’s educational reach
  • Work with Communications and Marketing team on outreach strategies to increase awareness of and participation in Museum’s educational offerings  
  • Perform other duties as required

  • Interest in applying the latest technologies to enhance education programs
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of California history/culture and bilingual in Spanish are pluses
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in museum education or a related field
  • Five years of professional experience in developing and delivering education programs in a museum or other non-academic setting
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle, with current California license and insurance, for occasional off-site events
Position:

Full time, salaried exempt, reports to Executive Director. Typical work hours Mon.-Fri. 8:30 am- 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Eligible for up to 20% remote work after 90 days upon request. Benefits include paid vacation and holidays, dental and vision insurance, employer-subsidized health plan, and 401(k) savings plan with match.  Starting salary $70,000-$80,000.
